Me and the lads called into Havelock the other weekend and went for a drive down to "Havelock University" (the local Mussell factory, LOL) and onto the wharf. I noticed a few kawai (kawhai?) chasing the herrings and only had my trout rod with a rapala lure on it, so I thought I'd give it a go. Took me about four of five casts to get the spead and motion of the lure just right, then the next cast after an almost hook up WHAM, this blardy huge kawai is on the end of my tiny trout-line! WOOOHOOOOOO! Heaps of fun, had to play him for at least ten minutes before he finally started laying on his side, and down the ladder of the wharf to pick him outa the water! Yeah, fishing is fun! ;D ;D ;D Please take some omega3 too before you go fishing next time, hope you wont forget the fish in the car next time ;D ;D Hehe, I missed this one, good one! ;D

Did you hear about this white baiting season? Some were attacking each other because of it?
I remember a few years back in Hokitika a guy pushed the head of another one under water because he got angry that he was on his favourite spot!

Been having a tidy up and came across some old pics that I have scanned. This is the boat I owned up north which we had some very pleasant memories of weekends away. 18 ft diagonal ply and glass.

Long before the boat, I builtthis buggy to get across the vast amount of sand in the Kaipara Harbour with our gear. Note surf casting rods on top and you can see the vast amount of area to get to the water. This was built out of an old horse drawn mower with a 7.5 BSA petrol motor powering it. Well is was better than carring our gear and all the fish back. LOL

When my dad and I went duck shooting we caught eels and sold them to the local fish shop. This helped to pay for some beer and our shotgun cartridges. LOL.

awesome meandog, cant imagine how valuable those pics are. I often went out eeling in waipukurau with the guys, they were huge eels, not just a few were 4ft plus in length and weighed up to 191b,
I dont eat eels but it was exciting to go out,..
when we rode the horses across creeks the big eels nipped the horses hocks,.and even followed the horses onto land,.we lived on a farm there.
I have heard there are still huge eels out there today, tho not as big as what we had. good one was nice to tell that story

At Mercer a few years ago a farmer had a huge eel trap on a forked willow branch and pushed it into the river. He used a dead chook for bait that had died in his poultry place. Then after sometime pulled the trap out straight into the pig sty and let the pigs loose on them. He explained this had to be stopped a few weeks before going to the slaughter house so it got rid of the fishy taste from the meat.

Awesome pics and stories meandog, I really like the "way things were" stories on MB's!!! I remember catching eels up the Ngawhatu stream, they were sooo long their tail would drag on the ground as we lugged them home on the end of our spears, feeling sooo proud when all the cars that passed slowed right down to have a good gawk, some even wanting to have a yarn and take some pics! I can just imagine the pigs and eels, I used to catch HUGE eels in the Tutaki River, up the Tutaki Valley near Murchison, and feed them live to the cockies wild porker! What a scene it was, grabbing the eel in his mouth and thrashing it about till it was a little more manageable, lol! Yeah, chicken is good bait, a commercial eeler I know still uses chicken in the traps. Oh, I taught that pig to smoke too, pretty sure he was addicted in the end, used to leap up and poke his nose over the edge of the stye and snort and wait till I puffed a long drag into him, haha, very non-pc I know, but the pig just loved it, made him go a bit silly, LOL!

Well I could have put this down below in the whinge section, but felt this is an important issue that affect us all, one way or the other. Tonight I had a lovely flounder for tea. This got me thinking about all the roes that are eaten in the world and the many billions of fish that will not mature. I feel that now fish are on a huge decline we should be informed of the breeding season and boycott all roe, smoked or whatever. I can go without if it means a few more fish hatch, so what do you folks think??? There seems to be a mighty dollar grab and no thought to where the next fish feed is coming from. No!!!! I am not a member of the Greenies, just common sense.!
