Does anyone know about solar panels? A few days ago I went to the bank to check if we could top up the mortgage to get a solar panel for hot water heating. I think everyone in Nelson should have one. The bank only wanted to see the GV which increased more than double since I bought the place and were willing to give me the money. Now I don't know which would be the best solar panels to get.

I used to sell them many years ago, but they would have improved a lot since then. I had to laugh at some of the Kiwi ingenuity back then like sticking two sheets of corrugated iron together. Another was lay black alkathene tubing backwards and forwards across your roof. These ideas do work but not very efficient. Have you tried the Consumers Institute? They would be your best unbiased bet.

LMAO I guess not!! There are too many. I thought after New years I will go to the council. There is a lady in charge of enviromental developments. I think she knows a bit about them. Yesterday I did do the hot water analysis on this website and they wrote back to me: www.solartech.co.nz/Files/ContactUs.asp

On the bottom of our electric kettle is a brown build up. Does anyone know how to clean it?

On the outside of or inside? And is your kettle aluminium? It is on the inside of the kettle and the kettle is made from stainless steel.

Try some vinegar diluted with water and boil, but you will need to rinse and boil it with water then discard before making your cuppa.

Yep probably do no harm.
But I am wondering why worry unless you are getting tainted water?

Yep probably do no harm. But I am wondering why worry unless you are getting tainted water? Yes I know I shouldn't worry! And there are so many other things which should be cleaned before the jug. But it looks nice when I get up in the morning and look in the jug and it is clean! I can make or break the day!

DON'T put vinegar and baking soda together in the kettle or you will have an erupting volcano out the spout!!!! Did you get your solar hot water sorted? My friend Judith has solar hot water and I can find out for you what system she put in?

My friend Judith has solar hot water and I can find out for you what system she put in? Well I just did it! It was foaming but only a short time. And it seems to work. I will leave it over night. Yes we have solar power for the hot water and it works wonderful. Today the roof temperature was over 80oC and it is not summer yet. We have enough hot water and don't use any more electricity to heat the water. Next step is to get information about solar panels for electricity and feeding it into the grid. In Europe they already do that. The counter will go backwards when you feed in and forward when you use electricity. They actually should promote this kind of "making" electricity. I don't like batteries to store the electricity (only for the small cottage we have in the back - where we will set up solar with deep cycle batteries)
