As Oasis points out, travelling vast distances faster than the speed of light (if possible) would turn back time. Light is the paradox - not wave or particle or matter or time? Waves to Doggitt.

Time does not speed up or slow down relative to the speed you are moving. All that happens is that light rays reach you at different rates. If you saw the clock strike twelve and then instantly travelled 5 light seconds away and looked back at the clock, you would see it strike 12 again five seconds later. No time travel would of occurred. Like Ivyplus says, we are observing this phenomenon every time we look at a star, what we are seeing is not happening now but tens of thousands of years ago. It is a form of the time travel theorised about by Einstein.
I thought that Einstein only said we would appear to travel in time (because of the travelling properties of light as illustrated above), not actually travel in time theoretically or physically??

Ah, a shaggy dog story..... The finale of the story was talking to our camping neighbours on Saturday and telling them the story of Priest falling off the cliff. Part of the story was the collar that must've been ripped off his neck in the fall. Later that day they returned from a walk around the rocky shoreline with Priests choker chain - complete with new registration tag!

Thanks, that's the simplest and best explanation I've heard so far on that question. But how do we know for sure until we travel at that speed? Have we thus far managed to obtain such speeds? I guess by bombarding solid particals with lazer beams this could be achieved? Maybe what is need is a lazer propelled space ship?

I have always had one difficulty in the theory of 'Time Travel' Backwards I can just about get my head around, but going forward to an event that has yet to happen is difficult for my pea brain to comprehend. In the book/movie Dune, they folded space....... a mind blowing concept that got them to other Galaxies in moments. I hope they find ways for us to travel at far greater speeds but I really hope that time travel never becomes a reality. The implications would be mind blowing. To have billions of people with the ability to move backwards and forwards in time, nothing would ever stay the same........... hard for me to explain what I mean.......... It would be handy for picking the lotto number though.......... Along with the rest of the populace......... so gambling would end. Now there's a positive of time travel

If we can go back, then maybe forward has also pre-occured? I think it's more likely we can, as an individual, go forward in time, it won't be long before we can be cryogenically frozen for an indefinite amount of time, (they have already done it with a mouse's heart) and brought back to life sometime in the future, now that is one type of time travel, surely?
