The sailing ship was not built by myself but I thought it was well worth showing as I used to own it a couple of years go. It is a model of HMS Royal Charles.

I used Kwila which I felt would blend well with the polished brass. I was fortunate at the time to have a mate that owned a Trophy Shop and kept all the brass offcuts for me. All the spokes are indivdually fitted and seeing I made 2 sets, so I had 144 spokes to shape and fit. The other feature is the spokes are set into the wheels at a 3 degree angle. I will see if I have a end on view that I can post.

That is great work, we bought back from France a few old wagon wheels, always impressed me how they put them together, almost a forgotten trade these days I guess, how/where/why did you learn the art?

Also what do you mean by a three degree angle?

Well how can I explain this.LOL. The axles are set at a 3 degree angle and the spokes the same so if you look at the pic the bottom half of the wheel the spokes are vertical and the top are actually at a 6 degree angle. I am not sure why, thats the way the plans were drawn. As far as learning goes well I am a fitter and turner but due to being smashed up badly nearly 20 years ago I decided that this was what I wanted to do so in a way I was still practising my trade. I have an engineers lathe and a wood lathe plus many power tools. I keep an eye out on the auction sites for items, like dental tooth picks, forceps and other bits and peices that I feel would be useful for this work. I even have proper scalpels.

Does any one know where in NZ one can get Decal paper and the spray to make your own Decals? These are available in the U.K. You can design your own Decal on the puter and then print it off on this special paper, then spray it with this special spray. Walla! got your own Decals. It could be ordered from the U.K. but would need to come by ship as aerosol cans are forebidden on planes.

Thanks for that, they seem to have heaps of Decals, but I can't find any material to make my own. I also Googled and came up with nothing in NZ.

I meant to say that any acrylic clear spray will work. If one could get hold of the paper a lot cheaper it would be a great thing for kids. Remember the sticker craze well this would take off as the kids could design their own stuff and print it off, even fake tattoo's. I ordered some clear paper as well as white.

Anyone have a clue how these were made. This is a glass blown ship in a bottle, I have 4 different ones, but there are many more available. One I have, it is claimed the sails have a gold gild on them it does look like something like that.

I have written to the acornmodel place and they have returned the email, here it is (maybe for the future if you need any more): Thank you for your email. We have the Supercal range of product - used with inkjet printers. I recommend the MIC SP3076 Supercal white inkjet decal system for $49.95 plus postage. It includes the decal paper, spray and instructions. You can obtain the clear or white paper and spray separately also. Please let us know if we can help further or if you wish to order the above.
