A couple of points to ponder before voting.
We want a 75% voter turn out to make this a binding referendum.
ie., at this stage we would like to see at least 75 voters.
Your Personal Messages, Private Messages on this site really are that, Personal and Private.
No-one will ever have access to your PM's, including the admin of these forums, this is frowned upon by proboards as an invasion of privacy. And good on them for taking such a stance!
I'd really like to encourage debate on this issue, give it some thought before voting, and let us know your reasons why, either way.
TIA...

Can it. It is far too open to abuse by unstable plonkas with agendas and detracts from the open, transparant environment so necessary (imho) to induce a lively, respectful, content-driven MB.
I have used the YOP PM system once I think, to warn a YOPer about info thay had made public and warning them through public posting would only have exposed them even more. So I accept there is a useful purpose to the PM system. However, there were other ways I could have channelled that warning through to the YOPer.
On balance, the loss of PM's is a very small price to pay for the transparancy that is so crucial to a credible forum. Those who don't have the balls to own their own posts, preferring to play out their pathetic games behind the scenes in a PM system, are no great loss to YOP anyway.
BTW, getting 75 votes in here might be a tad unrealistic. I don't know what the active user number is but I would suspect it's nothing like 100 users. Furthermore, by the time we hit any significant vote tally, the number of users may have increased significantly, thus duluting that 75% binding threshold considerably.

We plan on doing a mass-email out, most members seem to have chosen to stay ticked on the choice to receive mass emails from us, any help in putting together a newsletter would be most appreciated... Need to talk to manukarose about another staff wanted ad

I can probably cook something up that will degrade gracefully if their email clients can't handle html, but you'll have to serve it from your own SMTP server or whatever YOP has to offer. Additonally, I can't code multipart emails in PHP (it's not my gig). Furthermore, nothing I can do could ever happen overnight, but it will happen **edit** forgot JS is case-sensitive

Well I do intend to stick to my previous statement. Nothing wrong with PM providing it is not abused. Is there a feature that can block any one that insists on abusing this? My vote is for keep it.

Fair enough meandog, I think when we can be transparent enough out here in the open, abusive use of the PM system will be quickly enough exposed. Yes, I do believe there is a way to prevent certain posters from using the facility, perhaps we could make it a requirement for newbies until a certain number of posts has been obtained? This would stop people signing up and straight away PM'ing the admins "warning" them of potential problem poster, for example. Coding is now MPG's job, since he admitted to being the code monkey, hahaha, so ask him to find the code

I'm going to abstain from voting, I am well too aware of the negatives, but do use it occasionally myself, and certainly don't want to give folk the impression that I don't want them to PM me if they have a concern, I am also very open about my email addy, oasisnz@hotmail.com ...

Well. In essence, I agree with what mpg1 has said, but, however I don't find that pm's detract anything from this messageboard. I have used it a couple of times, and what I had to say in them could, essentially have been aired publically, but it was a message for one person.
I think plonkers that cause crap through the pm system should be weeded out and sprayed with roundup, rather than disabling an otherwise problem free "accessory." So, my vote, is a tentative "keep it," but would not be dismayed at the pm system being removed.

BTW:
Rather than aiming for an (almost) unobtainable voter turnout, why not just go with those that can be bothered giving an opinion?

It would appear there is a script that would give YOP admin the ability to disable selected or all members rights to the PM system. It's JS based so could probably be circumvented by the serially, seriously disturbed phlanx but I can give that a whirl in the background between O and I and see if we can break it with no outside help Obviously depending on how the voting goes. Anyway, if any of you 's can't handle posting your on the MB & must resort to PM's for it, then may heaven your sorry 's.

One of my main reasons for wanting to see this feature, is to send other posters items, plants, seeds etc. I feel this feature is important to get contact details, which should not be displayed on any forum. Afterall this is a message board, but more importantly a place to make friends and help one and other. We should not have to go through admin to get this info. If two posters are willing to swap contact details through PM so be it. (Now I am starting to sound like Winston Peters, god forbid)

I am happy for it to stay... If it is used to gossip it is not good, but there are times you need to contact someone privately... I think I have only used it about 6 - 8 times while I have been here... And thaey were only to oasis and manuka...
