A low developing in the north Tasman Sea today is expect to rapidly deepen and move southeast tomorrow to lie west of Northland by midnight Saturday. As this large low pressure area moves further south on Sunday a very strong easterly flow is expected to develop over the South Island. Rain should spread south over Marlborough and Canterbury Sunday afternoon and Otago Sunday evening. Heavy falls are possible Sunday night and Monday morning, especially about eastern ranges and hill country. At this stage there is still considerable uncertainty about the duration and intensity of this rain. This watch may well be upgraded to warning closer to the time as the situation becomes clearer.
This Watch will be reviewed by 9am Saturday.

A low developing today in the north Tasman Sea is expected to rapidly deepen tomorrow and move southeast to lie west of Northland Saturday night. Northeast gales and heavy rain are expected to reach the far north of Northland Saturday evening and quickly move further south Sunday morning.
Heavy rainfall warnings initally cover Northland, Auckland,Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne. In all these areas rain be very heavy at times with possible thunderstorms. Rainfall totals of 120mm in a 12 hour period are possible for parts of the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty.
People in these areas should watch for rapidly rising streams and rivers on Sunday. Driving conditions are likely to be hazardous with the possibility of slips and surface flooding.
At the other end of the country a northwest flow is bringing rain to south Westland and Fiordland throughout today and tomorrow. Heavy falls are expected on Saturday with up to 120mm in the ranges

Rain rain, go away... Come again another day... ***** It's raining, it's pouring; The old man is snoring. He went to bed and he Bumped his head And he couldn't get up in the morning. Anyone remember those ditties? Do you have any childhood rhymes about the weather Manuela? But let's not mention the Fohn, huh? ;D

Mum used to say this when I sat on her lap (with the very large dog) during thunderstorms "All up together, in this bad weather" There was more to the poem but I've forgotten. It's bitterly cold, windy and rainy here at the moment.

looks like Christchurch is getting a hammering.... I can confirm that .. in fact it has been icy cold all day and I wouldn't be surprised if we get a bit of sleet or hail!
