Nothing on TV just now - the warning came over the radio as I was driving home and was issued by the met service through the Nelson City Council.

Found it hidden in the Metservice pages...
Watch: Issued by MetService at 3:31 pm Tuesday 16 Oct 2007 Valid until 12:00 pm Wednesday 17 Oct 2007
This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts:
Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taranaki, Taihape, Wanganui, Manawatu, Tararua, Kapiti Horowhenua, Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson, Buller, Westland, A front will become very active and move from central areas of Westland this afternoon to lie over northwest Nelson at midnight. It will round the top of the South Island in the early hours of Wednesday morning affecting the area from the Hutt Valley (and possibly Wellington City) and the Kapiti Coast to south Taranaki in the hours before day break. Then from day break to midday Wednesday, it is expected to reach the Waitomo area. Heavy rainfall and severe gale warnings have been issued for a number of these areas.
Conditions are conducive for severe thunderstorms to form on and a little ahead of the main front. These are expected to bring a threat of intense rainfall rates, damaging northwesterly wind gusts, and a risk of damaging tornados.
The risk is highest through this evening over Buller and northwest Nelson, and is still significant in the outer Marlborough Sounds, the Wellington/Kapiti and Manawatu area in the early hours of the morning before it gradually eases as the front approaches Taranaki soon after daybreak.
The public are urged to stay alert to these severe weather conditions, with flash flooding possible, and damage from very high wind gusts.

It's been pretty wild weather lately, typical spring for Nelson methinks... I remember heaps of big storms when growing up in Stoke, I'm sure we used to get a lot more thunder and lightening back then, or perhaps it was more memorable?

Storm in a teacup! No tornadoes, no wind, not even any rain! All that excitement for nothing!
