Invest in a large bag of salt. If anything gets spilt on the carpet, soak up as much as you can wiith towels, etc, then sprinkle some salt over the damp patch. Salt soaks up moisture like nothing else.
Then you simply vacuum the salt up, and treat the stain.

Brilliant!!!
Also, if the drink is a lovely bright red or orange on your beautiful cream carpet, dilute the colour with as much water as possible, blot with a towel then use the salt idea. You may not even have to treat the stain after that!

Another thing for colored drink stains, is Soda water. The carbonated water helps to lift the coloring. Same with baking soda.

For any fatty/oily stains on clothing or furniture, sprinkle with talcum powder. It absorbs the fatty residues. Also when you wash the clothing, pour a little dishwashing liquid on the stain and then add to the washing machine.

If it works please let me know. I'll give it a go this week sometime. I'll buy a bottle of red, and a bottle of white, all for the cause of science. ;D I've never had such a good excuse to drink, I mean purchase, wine.
