Seems quite prominant in the sky down these here parts at the moment, a very red star, roughly Northeast in the sky...

Yeah, it's funny how many people don't realise that some of the planets are visible to the naked eye, Venus (i think) is one of the brightest stars in the night sky, a quick look at wiki tells all... In astronomy, the naked-eye planets are the five planets of our solar system that can be discerned with the naked eye without much difficulty. Hence, they were the only planets known to the ancients prior to the invention of the telescope. They are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, the five planets closest to Earth. The name planet comes from the Greek term πλανήτης, planētēs, meaning "wanderer", as ancient astronomers noted how certain lights moved across the sky in relation to the other stars. They called these objects asteres planetai, or wandering stars. In some cultures, the Sun and Moon have also been counted as planets, to make the seven classical planets. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked-eye_planetA bloke in Richmond has one of the most powerful private observatories in the southern hemisphere, we went up there one night, and was totally blown away observing the rings of Saturn and other such phenomenon.

Wow that would be awesome!
Apparently you can see Venus in the daytime, if you know where to look.

Thanks Snooka, will keep an eye out, however, methinks the part of Nelson I am in and travel to daily is too closely flanked by mountain ranges on the Eastern side, ie., the Richmond Ranges.
I sometimes see the first two stars in the sky at night when looking about South East, not sure what they are, and a third one appears shortly after, this is when the sky is still looking quite blue.

Found it, not so low, it's above the sunrise here now, almost exactly above where the sun comes up... Cheers Snooka,
