First we had Howard Morrison rubbishing the talent of Billy T James.
Now we have Kiri Te Kanawa doing the same to Hayley Westenra.
Silly old bag

;D Kiri has always been up herself. I can remember her stating she would never return to NZ to sing until they had a decent venue with proper acoustics. That was in the early years of her career so she has no right to criticise another singer who in my mind is equally as good at her profession. Grrrrr!!!!

i disagree these two are poles apart,. .kiri has already proved world wide she is a singer of high calibre and class and her voice is one of the worlds famous arts ,... she is entitled to her opinion as anyone one else,.. .the mature diva whom I saw singing with the maori club in gisborne,.. showed such pleasure doing so it will live in my memory for the rest of my life its not often New Zealand can claim such breath taking heartstopping class as her, and she is Kiwi thru and thru. you cannot compare the two , ,...one is a diva the other is yet to be ,..lovely young and talented with a long way yet to go another one to put Nz on the map she will set out on her trail blazing career and all we can do is wish her well,..

Yes I think Malvina Major is a wonderful singer too and I like Hayley Westenra. I don't think it is appropriate for the Diva to rubbish young talents.

Here is an article about her comments,
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa says too much has been made of her comments about singer Hayley Westenra.
Newspaper reports claimed that Dame Kiri said that she and 20-year-old Ms Westenra are in different musical worlds and that the popular operatic style Ms Westenra is known for is full of fake singers who have to use microphones. But she says she was taken out of context.
"It just seems like it's hyped up. The questions were rather difficult and I came out of the interview thinking, well, that's a mess, and of course look what has turned out. They want to sell newspapers. Follow the money, follow the money."
Dame Kiri says she stands by her remark that she and Ms Westenra work in different worlds, but she was not commenting on the quality of Ms Westenra's voice.
Dame Kiri is appearing in tonight's Starlight Symphony in Aucklan

I still stick to my comments further up the page. I wish there was a link to those statements, but back then computers were still a bit of a dream. Of course a lot of this stuff is deliberately said as a publicity stunt, they all do it particularly just before a show.
