One of the easiest overlooked, yet one of the most important things in the quest for good health.
Try to grow a few of your own vege's and avoid as much processed food as possible.
In my opinion a lot of so-called problems with the youth of today would be solved overnight by cutting a lot of crap out of their diets!

Agree there, especially with the kids eating junk.
In the area where I live, there are many, shall we say, poorer families. Their children all seem to live on takeaways such as McDonalds etc, and the local school is well known as one of the worst in Hamilton - I've even heard it called a 'breeding ground for bullies.'
You can't tell me there is not some relation between those 2 facts - ie, the takeaways and the bullies.

Years ago my wife and I did a fair bit of work for cyps, (respite and longer term care) and we definitely found that getting some of these wayward children onto a decent diet and regular sleeping habits turned them around like you wouldn't believe...
One girl had been diagnosed with that horrid ADHD label, and prescribed ritilan. I know there may be genuine cases where that stuff may be needed, but in my opinion it is far too readily dished out!

I think Papakura, my closest town has really gone to the pack. Every 2nd shop is selling 'junk' food. It is unbelievable that they can all survive, the amount of takeaways, coffee shops, lunch bars and then the restaurants,as well as the pubs. Then you have the supermarkets selling hot food, service stations the list goes on, corner dairies. I tried to buy a fancy empty bottle down town a few weeks ago with no success.(Ended up buying a carton of 24 from a wholesaler in Wellington) But if I was hungry I would be spoilt for choice. Ooops!! I overlooked the sausage sizzles outside the Warehouse and some supermarkets. Sigh

Yes, I've noticed that too. Out of all the kids I know who are on medication for ADHD, only about 2 really truly need it.
When my son was diagnosed as autistic, I was worried that the first thing the doctors would do was prescribe some sort of medication for him. I had done my research and knew that for my son's type of autism, no medication could help, only behaivoural therapy, so I was happy that not one doctor suggested medication.

I feel that this thread could also have its place in the whinge section as I feel quite angry when I see what is going on out on the streets. I have not for years been into any school grounds, so goodness knows what is being sold in there.

As one of my professions is a mother of two, I diagnose, too much junk food and not enough outdoor activity. I prescribe the basics, two slices of decent bread with optional fillings, two pieces of fruit, and maybe a good old fashioned baked biscuit, slice or muffin, and a water bottle. For Lunch. After school, no tv, no computer, no electronic games, instead chores, tree climbing, bike riding and playing outdoors. Extra chores may be necessary if your children are squabbling. Remember everyone, if your children hate you, you are doing a wonderful job.

Hey, you forgot to give them breakfast, no wonder they show up at school with no lunch... Sounds like you have got the rest of the formula pretty good though...

Well I have approx 200 school kids go past my place morning and night, it is amazing the amount of pack lunch that is thrown out for the seagulls. I have even found hard boiled eggs thrown against my hedge. Which I shelled and fed to my dog, he did not complain. These kids that are doing this, I would put a small wager on it that they are buying pies etc. from the dairy that they have to pass.

One thing I always remember as a kid was my friends all being jealous of me for my home made bikkies and cakes that were in my lunch.
My best friend would always try to swap sandwiches with me cos I had things like cheese and onion or ham and mustard, and she would only have jam or vegemite.
And I was super slim and healthy until about the age of 17 when I came down with a flu which never really went away and turned into Fibromyalgia (GRRRRR!!)

Yesterday I have received an email from a friend of mine. She wrote did you know that they make vanillin out of a byproduct when making paper! I have heard one of the E-numbers (E910) is made of dark hair mainly Asian and is used in bread and other bakery broducts. E120 is made from an insect which is used as a red dye in food Sometimes I wonder what else are we eating?

I start wondering if all the hormones in our food starting to mixup our sexual patterns and maybe this is why more and more are becoming gay. Just a thought (no offence to anyone)!

Food is actually a big thing for me. (And some drinks as well!!!). I even believe that some behaviour could be changed with change of food. But maybe not the gay thing!

Yes I will most certainly go along with the food/behaviour theory. My youngest daughter was hypoactive and if she got her hands on vegemite on toast in the morning, she would virtually demolish the place. There was other food too I think chocolate was another. Thankfully she grew out of it. When she was very naughty I gave her a slap on the bum (ducks from Sue Bradford) she squinted her eyes and I could read on her face, saying I will not cry for you old bugga. LOL.

All true, you dont see many overweight (blamed on metabolism) ethiopians or any with behavioural problems! Totally agree with hormone suggestion - all the meat being pumped full of them plus all the antibiotics plus all the intense farming does not make good meat. i do buy free range eggs, but like many others cannot afford to buy all organic. Have also started growing a few of my own LOl (not cows though) -yet!
