Decided it was time to update the old xp dinosaur I was running.
Seen a tidy little system at Harvey Norman in Blenheim in the weekend, advertised as "down to $999" with an LCD screen...
1gig of RAM, 2g processor, 160MB hard drive.
So I ask the question, "How much for the box alone..." (already have a 19" monitor, why bother?)
"Can do that for $649"
"And how much for an extra gig of RAM?"
"'Bout $69"
"And that GeForce 7300 Graphics Accelerator?"
"'Bout another $120. Tell ya what, do the whole package for under $800..."
"SOLD!", said I...
$799.99 for a pretty good system with the following specs...
AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1150 2.00GHz. More than grunty enough for anyone but the real geeks out there.
HardDrive, 160GB. Small by todays standards, but more than adequate in my humble opinion. The fact is, you really should be backing up your files on to cd's or some other system anyway, so there is no need for sooooo much storage space...
RAM, 2046MB. 2gig. Plently.
GIGABYTE GEFORCE 7300 GS NX73G series Graphics Accelerator. Plays all the things I need it to. And then some.
32-bit Operating System, running Windows Vista Home Basic. Well. What can I say? It's actually impressed me very much. Seemed a bit cumbersome (or tiresome? when I turn a machine on, I want it to work immediately, LOL!) at first.
Vista seems to be somewhat "intuitive", and learns very quickly how to make the applications you mostly use operate very efficiently, even when you have several applications open at once.
Nice work Bill, hope you enjoy your retirement...
