I was just watching Good Morning when a guy mentioned the self-biography Richard Branson wrote.
He said his mother left him about 9km from the home and asked him to find his home. He was then only 4 years old.
I guess in those days it was less dangerous to do that and in some ways I can see that this helps building self-esteem.
When my children were young I let them do things which other parents wouldn't. I was overlooking them (from a distance so they couldn't see that I was overlooking them) and only intervening when something went wrong. For example I gave them hammer and nails, or let them use my sewing machine when they were only about that age. When they wanted to do anything I would encourage them to do it. I think parents can hold back children by saying: You can't do that!
