I belong to a forum called Tech Support Guy. I've learnt heaps about the workings of computers/internet etc from this site. Geared towards newbies as well as the more computer literate.
The three things they suggest to keep your computer safe and clean, All free software.
AVG antivirus
Adaware from Lavasoft to rid your computer of spyware and also cleans cookies/registry.
Spybot - most used for it's "immunisation" which recognises and blocks thousands of pop-ups
Two antivirus's running in unison is best avoided. I've deleted/removed Nortons from my system.
I've used the above three softwares for years now with no problems.
I am in demand by friends/wokmates to fix their computers. This is what I do and it works everytime. I don't ask for payment but grateful friends have given me bottles of wine, petrol vouchers, food parcels from their gardens etc.
1) On an internet page, go to Tools, Internet Options, Delete Cookies, Delete Files, Clear History.
2) Remove all old antivirus software, download AVG, set up scheduling (so that it updates and runs at certain times), RUN AVG to clean computer of virus's
3) Download Adaware and run "Full system scan". Tick all the boxes when it has finished scanning and "NEXT" to get rid of spyware.
4) Download Spybot and update immunisation files. Immunise!
That's all I do, but the results are amazing. Most of my "customers" have dialup so I download the software .exe's onto CD to save time.

Yep I have those 3 installed, and as long as my arse points to the ground I will never put Norton back in my computer. It cost me heaps and caused me no end of problems.

Right guys heres something I found out today. I am in a Shipmodelling forum and the guy that runs it has put out a warning to his members regarding Adobe Reader. It apparently has a fault where hackers can get to you. So he has advised us to remove the older program and instal the latest one which is Adobe Reader 8. This has not got the fault the older programs had. I did have Adobe Reader 6 but no longer. Takes a damned long time on dial up to download, about 1 1/2 hrs.

Computer Geeks will understand this more than myself. If you have the Adobe Plugin enabled in your browser, DISABLE it right away!!! This threat appears to affect all types of browsers, but mainly Firefox and Internet Explorer. Again, the threat is not with the site you are visiting or with an actual p_d_f file itself, but with a vulnerability with in Adobe Reader. This can be exploited with ANY site you visit that has p_d_f file links, not just the Forum and the wrong combination of Browser and Adobe. Members', please do not place links to p_d_f files in any post. The hackers exploiting this Adobe vulnerability are scanning web pages looking for p_d_f file links. Once found, they wait for an innocent user to come along with just the right combination of browser and Adobe version. When found, the hacker uses cross-site scripting to gain access to that unsuspecting users' computer. According to organizations like Secunia and The French Security Incident Response Team (FrSIRT), the best thing for users to do at this time, is to upgrade to Adobe 8.0.0 , where the vulnerability has been removed.
