OpenOffice.org have a suite of free applications that IMO are every bit as powerful as those included with MS Office and they are continually improving as some very bright people work on them. Here's the link: www.openoffice.org/

I agree Aztec, the openoffice suite is excellent, and it can open and work with most of the MS applications. Yes, the people, and the philosophy, behind open source software, is very bright.

MS Office is the WORLD standard for standard office tasks. Thus using openoffice will not help your career-employment prospects much. MS Office can be found quite cheap from overseas sources (ebay is where I got mine) and the new 2007 one is great once you get over the shock.
Opensource works, I use a lot of opensource apps, but not openoffice.
