Okay when/if you post your drawings can you please tell me if you are right or left handed? Thanks. PART ONE: Learning to draw with the Right side of your brain. Many righthanded people (not limited to of course) draw with their left hand side of the brain, this means your brain isn't really seeing as an artist does, but doesn't mean it can't. You may be in the group that already can do this and what you will learn here will sharpen the skills you already have. I through study and experience have devised some exercises to help your brain see differently than it is now. You can repeat these exercises any time during the course and see if there is any improvement. a. Getting over the fear of the BLANK PAGE!! To many who are starting out in the drawing field, a blank page can be quite daunting. Do I draw in the corner? Or in the middle? Do I draw big and if I do will I be able to fit it into the page and it not look like Frankenstein's Monster? So here are three simple exercises that get you over the fear of blank pages. i) Starting in the far corner and using vertical and horizontal lines only FILL the page, you can use an A4 sheet of paper here. When drawing use your whole arm, not just your wrist, sit back and relax. Feel the paper become more the medium to a whole new world where there are no limits. ii) Repeat this but now you can start using diagonal lines as well, and start overlapping the lines so that shapes emerge, you MUST fill in the whole page. Now again sit back and see what you have created ... start to block in parts that look interesting to you. iii) Now lets take this blank piece of paper from the 2D world into the 3D - Cool huh? Again filling the WHOLE page similar to the example below. (Using odd shaped circles, curves and lines). These pictures should only take 10 minutes each to do. When you have finished each picture - DATE, SIGN and put what # Lesson it was next to it.

Part ONE: b. Learning to not rely on your drawing hand. Very simply ... we get into a comfort zone and stay there, and when people tell us to try new things often we balk, because it just doesn't feel comfortable. So the next two pictures are going to be a little tricky. i) Using the OPPOSITE hand you use to draw - draw your other hand. (Ie: If you are left handed use your right hand to draw your left). When doing this apply the lesson you have just learnt to fill the page, don't get too tiny. ii) Now using the hand you draw with - draw your other hand WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE PAGE. YES! That is what I said ... NO CHEATING!!! (AND we are allowed to laugh at these ones!) C. One FINAL exercise will complete the lesson this week. Again this is an exercise to help your brain understand the concept of composition, of line drawings and of not just drawing what you see, but what you don't see but is there. So ... please draw the following without turning it up the other way and without trying to draw it the right way on your paper. Use either A4 or A3. I DON'T care what it looks like, now is not the time to try and achieve a masterpiece. This picture was used when I was back in school (not saying how long ago) and I see it is still being used for this exercise by authors and teachers all over. Okay NEXT WEEK. We will be considering NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE SPACE and creating some interesting silhouettes. This will be a continuance of retraining the brain. Hope you have enjoyed and remember to work at your OWN pace this thread isn't going anywhere and you just do what you can when you can. If you want to ask questions do ... and don't think you CAN'T once you start thinking that you won't be able to because you have told your brain that you can't. In my class YOU CAN! Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Well done you. Your chair has a very 'sexy' shape to it ... it's a well drawn piece. I am quite excited to see your progress I am hoping you will be pleased. And .. I'm glad you had fun.

Kim, Kim, Kim, I am sure everyone watching is dying to know the brand of loo you use. Although I too think we won't lose sleep if you don't tell us. The chair is well done ... I think you will benefit from the full blank page exercises.
Excellent effort and will definitely be interesting to see your progress. Hoping that you won't be as TIMID with your drawing when finished the course. Your retort is welcome.
Teach.

Thanks Teach, are you for real about the chair? I thought it was crap! ;D
You are right on to it Teach, in the pic you can't hardly see the wrinkles in the first knuckle on the index finger, because in reality they are less pronounced than the huge crevasses on other parts of my hands, many wrinkles were intentionally ignored...
Had a good laugh when reading your feedback Teach, you are right, art is fun! ;D

Well you are all righthanded ... DUH Manukarose you can tell by which hand they all drew! haha.
Mamamia (hiya darlin') - What I do like about your work is your ability to fill the page, you aren't timid in your drawing you just need to learn some techniques which I am HOPING we can do through this thread.
You have an eye for detail especially when you love something (Ie: Jewellery) and your chair you really tried to get in perspective didn't u?
Nice work hon ... Now forget them and move on - we will refer back to your first drawings in 2 1/2 months. xxx
