Right you lot!!! I've given you more than enough time to do all that work! *Winks.
On to : Taaadaaaaaaaaa...
LESSON TWO:
Negative and Positive Space ...
Now you have learnt to fill the page with your 'scribbles' you are no longer scared of the 'blank page'.
What though if you wished to draw a specific item, where would you place it? And how do you make it look like its part of the background as well as the foreground.
A good way of doing this, and still training your right handside of your brain, is drawing the negative spaces instead of the positive.
So when you place a chair on your paper, the 'spaces' become as important as your subject, or object you are drawing.
A beautiful example of drawing negative spaces in an iron scrolling on a park bench seat.
I took my students to the Waimarie (steam boat in Wanganui) this week and we sat and looked at negative spaces, both with the pencil and with the camera.
So for this week you guys have five exercises.
Assignment One: To redraw the chair you drew, or perhaps even better choose a chunkier chair but instead of drawing the chair - I want you to draw the spaces inbetween and around it. This way you may be surprised at how in perspective the chair becomes. Woww! All of a sudden you guys are becoming artists!
Assignment two: This is a fun one: Get some black paper and cut out shapes like squares, circles, triangles and place them on the paper so that the white paper make shapes as well (can be any shape you wish).
Assignment three: Arrange a simple bowl of fruit but instead of drawing the fruit draw the background only and shade it.
Assignment four: Again using black paper I want you to make a picture of a goblet and two profiles using only one black shape (use yr imagination on this one) on a white background.
I will show you next week what it should look like, just want to see if you can work it out.
Assignment Five: If you have a camera - which most people do - next time you are out in the park ... use it to compose in your digital screen a composition that highlights the negative spaces around the subject or part of a subject. Take a photo and send us the one you like the best.
Next week we will focus on edges and contours.
Well done to all who are trying remember you can reach me anytime at Nuka@clear.net.nz to ask questions or to send me your work for feedback.
Teach is proud!

That's very cool ...this course won't be completed until February my end anyway. While I find this a slow season for myself I appreciate you guys are up to your ears in preparations etc.
All I really want from this is to see u guys can actually draw, and see that what I'm giving you does really work.
Would love some references if it does work also - so I can pop those on my page I hope to get up soon (the professional one I hope someone like Kiwi-web will do for me).

yes its fun isnt it? You will find even from the first time you take up the pencil that you are starting to see things differently. Well done on your efforts there.
I see two very positive things from your drawing and that is you have an eye for detail and you are a bit of a perfectionist.
What I hope the lessons will do for you is get you to be free and brave with your art along with a better perspective of the subject and the spaces around it.
I look forward to seeing much progress in your case. I think you are awesome!

Hello, as parents are well aware, a new school year is upon us. I dont know about all of you, but wow things are expensive arent they? Anyway, this means also I am getting back into the swing of teaching, both online and offline. I am very excited about my offline classes as I have had alot of interest in the Wanganui area and have at least six new students starting this term. I am also very excited about the prospect of continuing the lessons online for those who can't meet me face to face. I am currently working on Modules similar to what you guys have been doing in here, so to ustilise my time and save me typing everything out twice ... all YOP members who want to continue learning to draw, can do by following the modules on this link: groups.msn.com/ManukarosesOnlineArtClasses/However, do NOT enroll on the msn site, as this will cost you (unless you have been personally invited) ... continue to post work in this thread and I will appraise your work and work with you as individuals here. This is the ONLY place I offer free art lessons. So lets do it this year guys ... lets bring out the artist in you! Looking forward to some awesome stuff, and not so awesome, because we have to have the not so awesome so we can learn! Warm huggles to my YOP students.

Thanks a lot for this offer. I guess I should try to draw. I love colour pencil drawings and I bought myself a book how to draw ferries. I haven't started yet - from time to time I look at the book and think I wish I could draw like them.
